Things have changed quite a bit in the world advertising with regard to smartphones and mobile since 2009, but one thing has hasn’t changed: The single biggest target for mobile advertising remains Apple’s iPhone.
However, outside of the iPhone, there have been significant shits over the past few years, according to the 50th quarterly S.M.A.R.T. study from Millennial Media.
Notably, Google’s Android has seen the strongest growth among the OS’s. More than two-thirds of the top advertising impressions are on Android phones. Additionally, the full Top 20 list of devices is comprised of smartphones this year. Compare that to 2009 when there was only a single Android device and the list was mostly made up of “feature phones.”
While Android as an OS is clearly dominant in 2011, Apple is still the single largest manufacturer of devices on the list – with Samsung a distant second, and surprisingly, RIM is still holding at a close third place (mostly on the power of the Curve)
With regards to specific devices, Apple holds a huge lead with 16.2% for the iPhone, followed distantly by BlackBerry’s Curve at 5.6%. Motorola’s Droid lands at third place with 3%, and Samsung’s Nexus S comes in fourth with 2.7% (all ranked on advertising impressions). No other device clears the 2% mark.
It’s interesting to note, that of the top 3 connected devices in 2011, two of them are tablets (iPad & Galaxy Tab).
Which begs the question, what’s your tablet strategy for your brand – and your advertising dollars?
